Vancouver Canadians lose NWL Championship Series

Vancouver Canadians 3 Hillsboro Hops 4

The Vancouver Canadians lost game 2 of the NWL Championship, so they lose the best of three series, 2 games to none.

They fell behind early tonight. Starter Matt Smoral gave up 3 runs in the first inning, giving up a walk, a pair of singles, another walk and a ground rule double, to put his team down early. Then, in the second, with one out, he hit batter Taylor Ratliff Hillsboro's center fielder. Ratliff stole second, moved to third when catcher Ryan McBroom dropped strike three and had to throw to first and then scored on a wild pitch. That was all the scoring the Hillsboro Hops would do but it was enough.

Smoral went 2.2 allowing 3 hits, 4 earned, 3 walks and 3 strikeouts. Relievers Nick Baker, Rob Wort, Luis Ramirez and Zac Curtis kept the score where it was the rest of the way.

Vancouver scored a run in:

  • The 4th on back-to-back doubles from Christopher Carlson and Ryan McBroom.
  • The 6th. Carlson walked, Ryan McBroom and Rowdy Tellez each singled and Carlson scored on a Mike Reeves force out.
  • The 7 on two out singles from Franklan Barreto, Carlson and McBroom.

They got a one out walk in the 9th but didn't score.

So the Canadians' run as North West League Champs ends at 3.
