Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports reports that the Blue Jays have acquired starting pitcher Jesse Chavez from the Oakland Athletics. Liam Hendriks will be headed the other way. Chavez, 32, posted a 4.18 earned run average in 30 games last season. He has just one more year of team control and is projected to earn $4.7 million in 2016.
Oakland will receive a 26 year old reliever with four years of team control. Hendriks was very effective out of the Jays bullpen last season boasting a 2.92 earned run average in 58 appearances. Added velocity seemed to be the trigger of his breakout year, and he managed to maintain his strong command. The Australian will be missed in the Blue Jays bullpen.
This will be Chavez's second stint with the Blue Jays. He made nine appearances for the Blue Jays in 2012 before being picked up by the Athletics. He initially came out of the bullpen in Oakland, but was finally given the chance to start in 2014.
