James Shields signs with the Padres: Cotillo

Peter G. Aiken-USA TODAY Sports

I must admit, a part of me was still hoping that the Blue Jays would somehow be the ones to sign James Shields, but all signs pointed to his going to the Padres and so he will, according to SB Nation's very own Chris Cotillo. Who would've thought two years ago that Sheilds will find himself in San Diego along with Wil Myers?

The deal, according to Cotillo, is for four years with an option for year five and is in the $72 to $76 million range, coming just under the $20 million AAV mark. The signing will give the Royals a pick in the 2015 amateur draft.

Pending a physical, the 33-year-old will be joining a rotation that includes Tyson Ross, Andrew Cashner, and Ian Kennedy (plus the best of them all, Brandon Morrow). Padres general manager A.J. Preller also acquired the aforementioned Myers, as well as Matt Kemp, Derek Norris, Justin Upton, and Will Middlebrooks this offseason.

Oh, Josh Johnson too.
