The Blue Jays have decided to put Jose Reyes on the DL. Jonathan Diaz gets called up from Buffalo.
Reyes has had a rough time of it, but he started today's game off with a single and then stole second. The steal of second seemed ill-advised at best. Here is a guy with a cracked rib, diving hard into second base. After that he seemed to be hurting everytime he swung the bat, though he did make a could of decent plays in the field. Reyes started the season hot, but, since the injury, hasn't been hitting. In all he's been hitting .250/.267/.304, but over the last week he's hit just .105/.100/.105.
In Diaz we have a a very good defensive player (or at least reputed to be very good, he's had some tough games when I've seen him play). He's a right-handed bat, so he could platoon with Ryan Goins. As a batter, he makes Goins look good. In Buffalo Diaz is hitting .190/.333/.238 in 15 games.
It is too bad that they DFAed Steve Tolleson the other day, they could have put Reyes on the DL when Michael Saunders was activated and kept Tolleson.
The Jays likely should have put Reyes on the DL when they found that he had the cracked rib, but then, he wanted to try to play through it. Now that he is on the DL, I hope he will recover quickly.
