Baby Bird Brief - May 12

The Baby Jays have a rough night as they go 1-3 with only Buffalo picking up a win. Matt Hague continued his recent hot hitting and Anthony Alford continued to put up lots of things in the box score

Buffalo Recap
Buffalo used a big 4th inning as they batted around and put up 6 runs in a 6-2 win over Durham. Buffalo held the Bulls to 4 hits and 6 walks on the night. They also struck out 6 batters. Buffalo was able to turn 9 hits,3 walks and 2 hit batters into the victory. They also struck out 3 times.

  • Miguel Castro started and went 1 batter beyond 2 innings. He was charged with an unearned run on 3 walks and struck out 3. He threw 43 pitches, 23 for strikes. I'm not sure if it's the pitch count or the innings count that the Jays are keeping Castro on
  • Todd Redmond came in and allowed a run on 3 hits in 5 innings. Redmond struck out 3
  • Gregory Infante threw a wild 0.1 innings, allowing a hit and 2 walks
  • Colt Hynes saved the day with a double play to get out of the inning
  • Bo Schultz pitched the 9th allowing only a walk and recording 3 ground outs

  • Matt Hague kept his hot streak going, as he picked up a single and a double. He also scored a run and drove 1 in
  • Brad Glenn had 2 hits, including a double. He scored a run and had 2 RBI
  • Melky Mesa & A.J. Jimenez both added doubles. Mesa had a K, while Jimenez added a walk
  • Dalton Pompey had a hit and a walk in this one. He also struck out once
  • Andy Burns & Chris Dickerson both had singles. Dickerson also picked up a stolen base

New Hampshire Recap
New Hampshire battled with the top team in the Eastern League, but came out on the short end of a 2-1 decision. New Hampshire loaded the bases with 1-out in the 1st, but was only able to score 1 run, and that proved to be the difference. New Hampshire put up 6 hits and 4 walks. The Fisher Cats struck out 4 times. New Britain had 7 hits, a walk and a hit batter. They struck out 11 times against New Hampshire pitching

  • Matt Boyd started and allowed an unearned run in 5 innings. He gave up 4 hits and a walk. Boyd struck out 7 as he threw 92 pitches, 64 for strikes
  • Scott Barnes allowed a run on 2 hits in 2 innings.
  • Blake McFarland threw 2 strong innings allowing only a hit. He struck out 4 batters

  • Matt Newman picked up 2 hits and a strike out
  • Jorge Flores had 2 singles as well
  • Dwight Smith singled and scored the only New Hampshire run. He also had a K
  • Andy Fermin had a hit
  • Kevin Nolan went hitless, seeing his hitting streak end at 10-games. Nolan did pick up a walk
  • Jon Berti also had his hit streak snapped, as he went 0-5 with 2 K's
  • K.C. Hobson, Jack Murphy & Shane Optiz each had a walk

Dunedin Recap
Dunedin jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the 2nd inning, but that was all the offense they could get in a 4-2 loss to Fort Myers. Dunedin had base runners in every inning, but couldn't score any more. Dunedin picked up 9 hits on the night, although they came from only 5 batters, and 5 walks. They struck out 12 times on the night. Fort Myers had 8 hits, 4 walks and 2 hit batters for the game. They struck out 4 times. Fort Myers also picked up 4 stolen bases in this one.

  • Jairo Labourt started and went 3.2 innings. He allowed a run on 3 hits and a walk. Labourt also struck out 2. He recorded 0 ground outs and 3 fly outs
  • Scott Silverstein followed and allowed a run in 1.2 innings. He gave up 3 hits and 2 walks, while striking out 1
  • Jimmy Cordero had a rough outing as he allowed 2 runs on 2 hits, a walk, a hit batter, a wild pitch and a balk. Cordero did strike out a batter
  • Chad Girodo pitched to 1 batter and got a double play

  • L.B. Dantzler had 2 hits and a walk on the night
  • Matt Dean picked up 2 hits and a K
  • Dawel Lugo had 2 singles and struck out twice
  • Mike Reeves had 2 singles and 1 strike out
  • Roemon Fields had a single and a K
  • Mitch Nay had 2 walks and 2 strike outs
  • Jason Leblebijian had a walk and 2 K's

Lansing Recap
Lansing gave up a run in each of the first 3 innings as they fell 5-3 to South Bend. Lansing outhit the Cubs, picking up 12 hits and a walk. The Lugs also struck out 5 times. South Bend had 10 hits and 4 walks. Lugs pitchers struck out 4 Cubs.  South Bend stole 3 bases in this one. Lansing loaded the bases in the 9th with no one out, but was only able to score 1 run.

  • Jesus Tinoco started and went 3.2 innings, allowing 3 runs on 7 hits. He walked 2 batters and struck out 4
  • Colton Turner allowed an unearned run on a hit and a walk across 2.1 innings.
  • Mark Biggs threw a shut out inning. He gave up a hit
  • Jose Fernandez allowed a run on a hit and a walk in an inning of work

  • Anthony Alford was at it again, picking up 2 hits, including a double. He also had a walk and struck out twice
  • Danny Jansen, Boomer Collins & Justin Atkinson each had 2 singles in this one
  • J.D. Davis & Rowdy Tellez both added RBI doubles.
  • Tim Locastro & Ryan McBroom both had singles. Locastro also picked up his 10th hit by pitch of the season
  • Gunnar Heidt struck out twice
