Baby Bird Brief - May 21

The Baby Jays go 3-0 on Thursday night as Dunedin won in a walk-off for the 2nd straight night, Lansing's bats put up 17 runs and Buffalo found a way to win. Chase De Jong had a strong start for Lansing, while Brad Glenn continues his hot streak for Buffalo

Buffalo Recap
Buffalo & Toledo played a back and forth game as there were 3 times the game was tied, 2 Buffalo leads and 2 Toledo leads, but ultimately a 4-run 8th inning gave Buffalo the 9-5 victory. Buffalo had 12 hits, 5 walks and 8 strike outs. Toledo picked up 9 hits, 4 walks and 6 strikeouts. Both teams made an error and each hit a home run

  • Andrew Albers started and had his worst outing of the year. He went 6 innings, allowing 5 runs, 4 earned, on 9 hits and a walk. Albers gave up a 2-run HR, 3 doubles and struck out 4. Albers also got 11 ground outs against 1 fly out
  • Rob Rasmussen followed with a scoreless inning and was credited with the win. Rasmussen walked 2 and K'd 2
  • Gregory Infante pitched 2 scoreless innings, allowing only a walk

  • Brad Glenn kept his hitting up, ending up a triple shy of the cycle. His 2-run HR in the 3rd was his 4th of the season. He also drove in 4 on the night. Glenn is now hitting .436 over his last 10 games (17-39, with all 4 HR's)
  • Matt Hague had 3 doubles on the night, scoring 2 runs, driving in 3 and adding a walk. Hague has 8 hits in the last 3 games, and hits in 21 of 22
  • Andy Burns had a 3-hit night, including a double. Burns scored 2 runs in this one
  • Jose Reyes made a rehab start and went 1-4, with 2 fly outs, a line out and a single
  • A.J. Jimenez had a double and 2 K's
  • Kevin Nolan had a hit
  • Jonathan Diaz came on as a pinch runner for Reyes and scored 2 runs on a walk. Diaz also had a stolen base
  • Chris Dickerson picked up 2 walks and a stolen base
  • Melky Mesa had 2 K's

New Hampshire had a needed day off to prepare for their 7-game home stand

Dunedin Recap
Dunedin was able to battle back after being down early and produced a second straight walk-off win in a 3-2 victory over St. Lucie. Dunedin was lucky in this one as they were able to hold St. Lucie to a 1-14 mark with runners in scoring position. For the game Dunedin had 9 hits and 2 walks, and struck out 6 times. St. Lucie ended up with 8 hits and 2 walks, and they struck out 7 times. Down by 1 heading to the bottom of 9, Dunedin got a lead off HR from Derrick Loveless and then battled back to load the bases and got a walk-off walk.

  • Murphy Smith started and allowed 2 runs on 5 hits and 2 walks over 5 innings. Smith picked up 2 strike outs and 8 grounds outs on the night
  • Jimmy Cordero threw 2 scoreless innings, allowing 2 hits and striking out 2
  • Chad Girodo pitched the final 2 innings, allowing a hit, while striking out 3. Girodo also hit a batter

  • Mitch Nay & Dawel Lugo both put up 2 hits in this one, adding a double each. Both had a K. Nay scored a run and Lugo drove in 1
  • Derrick Loveless got the rally going in the 9th with his 3rd HR of the year. He also added 2 K's
  • Maicer Izturis had a hit
  • Matt Dean & Jason Leblebijian both had a hit
  • L.B. Dantzler came in and took a walk in the 9th to load the bases
  • Boomer Collins was the hero with his walk in the 9th to score Matt Dean. Collins also had a hit

Lansing Recap
Lansing got their bats going early and often in their game Thursday night. The Lugs put up runs in 6 of their 8 trips to the plate, as they pounded out 16 hits in a 17-2 victory over South Bend. The big inning was an 8-run 6th inning. Lansing also added 6 walks and struck out 8 times. South Bend picked up 6 hits and struck out 7 times on the night. Only 1 Lugnut batter didn't pick up a hit, although all 9 had RBI's in this one

  • Chase De Jong started and almost sealed the deal as well. He went 8.2 innings, allowing 2 runs on 6 hits. The only runs came on a 2-run HR in the 4th inning. De Jong struck out 6 and had 9 ground outs and 9 fly outs
  • Mark Biggs struck out the only batter he faced

  • Rowdy Tellez had a strong night, picking up 3 hits, a sac fly and a walk. He had 2 doubles, scored 3 runs and drove in 3. Tellez also had a stolen base
  • Danny Jansen had 2 doubles and a single. Jansen scored 2 runs, drove in a run, took a walk and K'd once
  • Chris Carlson finished a HR short of the cycle, as he had his 6th double and 1st triple of the year
  • Tim Locastro had a single, a double and a walk on the night. He also stole 2 bases to give him 16 for the year, and scored 3 runs
  • Josh Almonte had 2 hits and 3 K's on the night
  • Ryan McBroom added a double and struck out twice
  • Anthony Alford had a hit, 2 walks, a strike out and scored 3 runs
  • Gunnar Heidt had a hit and a sac fly. Heidt also had a walk and a K
  • Justin Atkinson didn't pick up a hit, but had an RBI ground out in the big inning, where he was the 1st and 2nd outs of the inning
