Baby Bird Brief - June 3

It was a rough day for the affiliates as they went 1-4 on Wednesday, with only Matt Boyd's gem leading New Hampshire to victory

Buffalo Recap
Buffalo had another rough game offensively, as they couldn't find much offense in a 3-0 loss to Indianapolis. The Herd actually out-hit Indy 8-7, but went 1 for 7 with runners in scoring position. Buffalo was shut out on 8 singles, striking out 4 times. Indianapolis picked up 7 hits, (5 were extra base hits) and 2 walks, while striking out 9 times.

  • Daniel Norris started and allowed 3 runs on 7 hits over 7 innings. The problem was the type of hits, as Norris surrendered 4 doubles and a solo HR to Pedro Florimon. Norris only walked 1 which was a better result, and struck out 8. He threw 97 pitches to get through 7 innings, including 69 strikes
  • Gregory Infante pitched a scoreless inning, walking a batter and striking out one

  • Dalton Pompey had a better night at the plate, going 2-4. He was picked off and caught stealing however
  • Andy Burns had 2 hits. Burns also picked up a stolen base
  • Sean Ochinko had 2 singles on the day
  • Matt Hague & Brad Glenn each added hits

New Hampshire Recap
Over the past week the Baby Jays have seen some strong pitching performances, and New Hampshire had another on Wednesday in a 1-0 win over Bowie. New Hampshire limited Bowie to 3 hits and 1 walks Wednesday morning in a 1:58 long game. Bowie struck out 7 times for the game. New Hampshire was only a little better than Bowie at the plate as they picked up 5 hits and a walk. The Fisher Cats also struck out 6 times. New Hampshire scored their only run unearned in the 3rd inning making Elih Villanueva a hard luck loser in a complete game.

  • Matt Boyd had a pretty solid start, going 8.1 innings, allowing 3 hits and a walk. Boyd struck out 6, got 3 ground outs and 10 fly ball outs. Boyd got a chance to close this out, but gave up a hit and hit his pitch count. Boyd threw 103 pitches, 67 for strikes
  • Blake McFarland came in a got the last two outs, including a strike out

  • Shane Optiz tripled and scored the only run in the 3rd
  • Melky Mesa & Cole Garner both had a hit and picked up outfield assists
  • Dwight Smith & Kevin Nolan both had singles
  • Ryan Schimpf had a walk and 2 K's
  • K.C. Hobson struck out twice

Dunedin Recap
Dunedin let this one slip away, as they allowed 4 runs in the top of the 9th in their 6-5 loss to Clearwater. Clearwater scored 2 in the 1st, before Dunedin came back with 3 in the 2nd and 2 more in the 5th. The 9th inning saw Clearwater come out with 3 straight hits and a wild pitch, before a sac bunt and an error allowed the winning run to score

  • Luis Santos started and allowed 2 runs over 6 innings. Santos allowed 5 hits and 2 walks and struck out 5. Santos did give up a HR in the 1st, but settled in well after that rough inning
  • Chad Girodo pitched 2 scoreless innings, allowing a hit, a walk and striking out 1
  • Justin Shafer had a rough go of it in the 9th. He was on the hook for 4 runs on 3 hits and a walk without retiring a batter
  • Alberto Tirado came in and made an error on a sac bunt to the first batter allowing the winning run to score, but then recorded 3 straight outs on a strike out and 2 ground outs

  • Mitch Nay had a single and a double a drove in a run. Nay also scored a run
  • Roemon Fields had 2 hits in the game and scored a run
  • Derrick Loveless hit his 4th HR of the year in the 2nd, a 2-run shot
  • Matt Dean had a triple, walked and struck out once
  • Dickie Joe Thon had a triple, drove in 2 runs and struck out twice
  • Dawel Lugo & Boomer Collins each had a walk and a strike out. Lugo added a sac bunt

Lansing Recap
Lansing had one bad inning, and that was enough for Burlington to pick up a 6-3 win. A 5-run 3rd inning was all that Burlington needed in this one. Burlington ended up with 10 hits, 3 walks and struck out 14 times. Lansing had 9 hits, 2 walks and 6 K's. Lansing made 3 errors on the night to hurt the cause as well

  • Shane Dawson started and had a rough outing. He went 3 innings, allowing 6 runs on 9 hits. Dawson did record 6 strike outs as well. Dawson gave up a solo HR in the 2nd inning, but was undone by 2 errors in the 3rd inning, including a throwing error of his own
  • Dusty Isaacs pitched 3 scoreless innings without allowing a hit. He walked 2 and struck out 3
  • Tim Mayza pitched the final 3 innings without giving up a run. Mayza allowed a hit and a walk, but struck out 5

  • Tim Locastro had 3 hits on the night for Lansing, and scored a run. He also stole his 26th base
  • Ryan McBroom had a double and struck out twice
  • Chris Carlson picked up a double
  • Justin Atkinson & Mike Reeves each had a hit and a walk
  • Anthony Alford & D.J. Davis both had 1-4 nights, with an RBI each and a strike out. Alford also had a sac fly

DSL Recap
The DSL Blue Jays gave up runs in 7 of the 9 innings as they fell to the DSL White Sox 12-5. The Jays had 11 hits and 5 walks on the day, striking out 8 times. The Sox had 14 hits and 5 walks, and struck out 4 times. Both teams made 2 errors on the day, but the Blue Jays led to 3 unearned runs.

  • Juan Nunez ('96 RHP) started and allowed 3 runs on 4 hits and 2 walks over 2.2 innings. Nunez recorded 1 strike out
  • Yennsy Diaz ('96 RHP) allowed 2 unearned runs on 2 hits in 2.1 innings. He recorded 1 K
  • Manuel Dominguez ('94 RHP) allowed 3 runs on 2 hits and a walk over an inning
  • Alvaro Galindo ('98 RHP) allowed 2 runs on 3 hits in 1.2 innings. Galindo struck out 1
  • Jose Agrinzones ('97 RHP) was on the hook for 2 runs in 0.2 innings. He allowed 3 hits and walked 2. Agrinzones also struck out 1
