Baby Bird Brief - June 4

Baby Birds had a solid day Thursday, going 4-1, with all 4 wins allowing only a single run. Scott Copeland was strong for Buffalo, Jeremy Gabryszwski was solid for Dunedin & Conner Greene had his best start for Lansing

Buffalo Recap
Buffalo got a strong pitching performance as they limited Louisville to 3 hits in a 4-0 Buffalo victory. Buffalo picked up 9 hits and 6 walks on Thursday, striking out 8 times. Louisville had 3 hits and 3 walks, striking out 9 times. Buffalo forced 5 Louisville errors, but only 1 unearned run counted on the day as the Herd left 11 LOBsters

  • Scott Copeland started and pitched 5 shutout innings. Copeland allowed 2 hits and 2 walks, and he struck out 5 batters. Copeland was his normal self, getting 8 ground outs as well
  • Jeff Francis pitched 2 perfect innings of relief, retiring all 6 batters he faced
  • Colt Hynes had a scoreless inning with a walk and 2 K's
  • Bobby Korecky pitched the 9th and allowed a hit but struck out 2 as well

  • Jonathan Diaz led the offense as he had 2 singles and a triple. Diaz scored a run, drove in a run and stole a base
  • Chris Dickerson had 2 hits and a walk. Dickerson also struck out twice and was picked off and caught stealing
  • Sean Ochinko had 2 singles and scored a run
  • Alex Hassan & Daric Barton both had a hit, a walk and a run scored
  • Dalton Pompey went 0-4 with a walk and 2 K's. Pompey did pick up a stolen base

New Hampshire Recap
It wasn't a good morning for the Fisher Cats as they were pounded 10-1 against Bowie. New Hampshire was only able to muster 3 hits and 3 walks on the day. The Fisher Cats also struck out twice in the game. Bowie drove 20 hits and had 5 walks against only 4 strike outs. Bowie went 8-23 with runners in scoring position, so the score is more flattering than it could have been.

  • Casey Lawrence started and allowed 8 runs on 14 hits in 4.1 innings. Lawrence struck out 2 and recorded 6 ground outs against 4 fly outs
  • Dustin Antolin followed with 2 runs against in 1.2 innings. Antolin gave up 3 hits and a walk
  • Cory Burns had a shutout inning, allowing only a walk
  • Jimmy Cordero had an interesting inning, but was able to keep it scoreless despite a hit and 2 walks. Cordero also had a K
  • Scott Barnes had a shutout inning around 2 hits and a walk. Barnes struck out one

  • Matt Newman had the best game at the plate for New Hampshire with a walk and a hit
  • Jack Murphy drove in the Fisher Cat run with a single
  • Kevin Nolan had a hit
  • Jorge Flores & Melky Mesa both had walks

Dunedin Recap
Dunedin got a strong start as they were able to limit Brevard County to 5 hits in a 5-1 victory on Thursday. Dunedin picked up 10 hits and 5 walks, striking out 8 times. Brevard County had 5 hits, including 3 doubles, and 2 walks. Dunedin pitchers recorded 6 strike outs on the night

  • Jeremy Gabryszwski started and was strong. Scrabble III had 6 shutout innings with 2 hits, 2 walks and 2 hit batters. Gabryszwski struck out 4 and recorded 5 ground outs and 7 fly outs.
  • Phil Kish allowed a run on 3 hits over 2 innings. Kish recorded 2 K's
  • Matt Dermody had a scoreless inning as well

  • L.B. Dantzler had a 4-4 night and added a walk. Dantzler scored 2 runs and drove in 1
  • Matt Dean had 2 doubles in this one. Dean added a walk as well
  • J.D. Davis had a single & a double in his return to the lineup. Davis also scored a run and was picked off
  • Roemon Fields had a hit but also added 4 strike outs in a rough night. Fields was also caught stealing
  • Christian Lopes had a hit and a walk
  • Ian Parmley had 2 K's, but also scored a run and stole a base
  • Mitch Nay went 0-3 with 2 K's, but had 2 sac flies
  • Dawel Lugo & Jorge Saez both walked

Lansing Recap
Lansing played a close game through the first 6 innings, taking a 1-0 lead to bat in the bottom of 7, before they picked up 4 more runs and cruised to a 5-1 win. Lansing picked up 12 hits and 2 walks, striking out 7 times. Lansing pitchers held Burlington to 7 hits and a walk, striking out 12 Bees.

  • Conner Greene started and set a career high with 9 strikeouts. Greene pitched 6.1 shutout innings, allowing 4 hits and a walk. Greene recorded 4 ground outs and 3 fly outs in his best start of the year
  • Michael Kraft got 2 outs on a ground out and a strike out
  • Colton Turner pitched the final 2 innings, giving up an unearned run on 3 hits and a Richard Urena error. Turner struck out 2 and recorded 4 ground outs

  • Richard Urena atoned for his fielding error with 2 doubles and a run scored. Urena also drove in 2
  • D.J. Davis had a single and a double in this one. Davis drove in 2 and took a walk as well
  • Ryan McBroom had 2 hits and scored a run
  • Mike Reeves had 2 hits in his 2nd game back with Lansing. Reeves also had a stolen base
  • Tim Locastro had 2 hits and a K. Locastro also picked up a stolen base and was caught stealing
  • Chris Carlson had a double and 2 K's. He was also picked off 2nd
  • Rowdy Tellez had a hit and a walk, and scored a run
  • Anthony Alford was hit by a pitch and scored a run. He also struck out 3 times

DSL Recap
The DSL Blue Jays came back from a rough outing and were able to pick up a 7-1 win over the DSL D-Backs. The Jays had 6 hits and 7 walks, striking out 4 times. The D-Backs also had 6 hits, but only walked once while striking out 10 times.

  • Yonardo Herdenez ('95 RHP) started and went 4 shutout innings. He allowed 2 hits and struck out 2
  • Ruben Ventura ('94 RHP) followed with 3 shutout innings. He allowed 2 hits and a walk, and struck out 5
  • Jairo Rosario ('93 RHP) allowed an unearned run on 2 hits in 2 innings. Rosario struck out 3

  • Sterling Guzman ('98 RHH SS) had 2 hits, drove in 2 runs, scored 3 runs and took a walk
  • Antonio Concepcion ('97 RHH C) had a double and a walk
  • Jesus Navarro ('98 RHH SS) had a hit
