After being designated for assignment by the Cardinals just yesterday, the Blue Jays scooped up utility guy / amateur guitarist Ty Kelly on waivers today. Kelly was then optioned to triple-A Buffalo. Since the Blue Jays had an open roster spot, no corresponding move was required.

Kelly just turned 27 a day before his DFA and is a true utility guy, having played every single position except for catcher in his seven-year minor league career. The bulk of his appearances have come at third base, second base, and left field. Through 79 games and 269 PA with the triple-A Memphis Redbirds, Kelly slashed .203/.317/.286. Those numbers are down compared to his previous triple-A numbers but that is to be expected as he moved to the American division from the crazy hitter-friendly ballparks of the Pacific side of the Pacific Coast League. He will serve as depth for the Bisons.

The Orioles selected Kelly in the 13th round of the 2009 draft and he had a cup of coffee in triple-A in mid 2012 but returned to double-A until Baltimore traded him for our old friend Eric Thames in June 2013. After a couple seasons in triple-A Tacoma in the Mariners organization, he was dealt to the Cardinals this offseason for pitcher Sam Gaviglio in November 2014. He was added to the 40-man roster in the offseason and has been serving his first option year in 2015.

Kelly is also an amateur musician and has put several of his original songs on YouTube:

According to his Twitter account (@tykelly11), he hates Nickelback and Creed, but likes Matt Carpenter and Marco Scuatro, which is a very positive reflection on him as a human being. He might not be a big league impact player, but he will at least be amusing on Twitter.

He briefly gained some fame when CNN used a photo of him in their story on the Cardinals' alleged hacking into the Astros' computers.

Welcome to the Blue Jays, Ty.
