Always love it when a baseball game makes you rewrite a whole bunch of stuff on the fly.
Seriously, what the heck is Goins on with Goins?! Get it? Because his name is Goins and that sounds like going. Do you get my joke about Goins? I have a whole page of this. He looks like an entirely different hitter at the plate, having great at-bats and getting on base almost every game. And then he goes and adds a crushed walk-off home run to his portfolio. Is this real? Is Goins actually this good? The answer is who-the-heck-knows-but-GOSH-THIS-IS-FUN.
Oh, and there was a whole baseball game that happened, but, really, who cares. Ryan Freaking Goins!!!
The game was a tight contest all the way, with the Jays giving up the tying run that sent the game to extras in the 9th inning. Jays starter Marco Estrada had a very Marco-Estrada-like start, going 7 innings and allowing 2 runs, both solo home runs. With the expanded rosters, and with Estrada not looking particularly dominant tonight, it was a rather strange decision to have a long leash on Estrada. Some would argue it cost the Jays, as Estrada gave up the 2nd run in his last inning of the game.
Like last night's game, the Jays bats couldn't get The Big Hit to put the game out of reach or a long extened inning to drive up their run count. Even though the opposing starter Cody Anderson looked quite hittable. To add to the confusion, the Native Americans, who don't hit many home runs, hit 3 solo-jobs today: two coming from the bat of Yan "The One That Got Away 2.0" Gomes. Gomes hit the game-tying home run off the Jays rookie closer, Roberto Osuna. Osuna uncharacteristically gave up some hard hit balls, also giving up a triple to Abraham Almonte immediately after the Gomes HR. Fortunately that run did not end up coming around to score.
Cecil and Lowe combined to keep the game tied in the top of the 10th, though there was some scary moments. And in the bottom of the 10th, the New Goins drove in Carrera, pinch running for Dioner, with the bomb to right.
While all that is fantastic, it's not all good news in Jays-land, as Edwin Encarnacion's hit streak ended at 26. He had several chances to extend the streak, but nothing fell in for him tonight. My condolences to those who care about streaks.
Dalton Pompey, while not starting the game tonight, played a large part in scoring a run today. In the 7th inning, Pompey came in to pinch-run for Justin Smoak, then promptly stole 2B and 3B and came around to score on a Pillar line-out to centre. His reign has just begun.
