We looked at how the batters have been doing in September last week, so let's look at the pitchers. Like I said, last time, I'm really doing this for me, I was kind of disconnected from the games when I was in Europe. It was kind of fun waking up in the morning seeing that the Jays had won while I slept.
The Jays have gone 16-8, so far this month. The pitchers have a 3.89 ERA. Starters have a 3.58 ERA, relievers 4.54. The reliever are having their worst month of the season, though things seem to have straightened out of late.
Pitchers
R.A. Dickey
R.A. has made 5 starts this month, 4 good ones, 1 bad. He was 2-1 with a 2.78 ERA. Batters hit .197/.222/.331 with 3 home runs, 4 walks and 17 strikeouts in 35.2 innings. He seems to get better as the season goes on each year. Earlier in the year I didn't think there was a chance the Jays would pick up his option, but there is a value to someone that pitches 200 innings a year.
Mark Buehrle
Mark had 4 starts, 1 good one, one ok, one bad and one worst. In all 0-1 with a 5.75 ERA. Batters hit .346/.375/.469, with 1 home run, 4 walks and 8 strikeouts. Batters had a .365 BABIP against him. I guess, sometimes you'll go through stretches when the balls won't find gloves. The Jays have a decision to make about if he makes the playoff roster. He's 8.2 innings short of 200, I think Gibby win give him every chance to get there,
Marco Estrada
5 starts, 4 good, 1 bad. He is 2-0 with a 2.84 ERA this month. Batters are hitting .198/.268/.387 against him, with 6 home runs, 11 walks, 15 strikeouts. He's been one of the nicer stories coming out of the season. He's the reverse end of the BABIP scale from Buehrle, with a .176.
Marcus Stroman
He's been amazing. 3 starts, 3 wins..1.89 ERA. Batter have hit .221/.274/.279 with 1 home run, 4 walks and 10 strikeouts in 19.0 inning. I thought he'd be good, but I thought he'd need a couple of starts to get used to it.
David Price
5 starts, 4 very good, one bad, but the went 5-0. He has a 2.32 ERA this month. Batters are hitting .205/.264/.277 with 1 home run, 10 walks and 37 strikeouts in 31 innings. It has been awhile since the Jays have had a Cy Young winner. It will be nice to have 2 major award winners after this season.
Brett Cecil
Brett pitched in 12 games, had 1 win, 1 loss, 1 hold, 1 blown save. It is amazing he could have a loss and a blown save in a month he hasn't allowed an earned run. He hasn't allowed an earned run since June 21. In 10 innings, he's allowed 5 hits, 1 walk with 19 strikeouts. Batters hit .135/.158/.162. He's been so good since becoming a reliever.
Roberto Osuna
Roberto pitched in 10 games. He had 3 saves, 1 blown save, 1 loss. In 10.1 inning, he has a 5.23 ERA, with 9 hits, 4 home runs, 2 walks and 6 strikeouts. Batters hit .225/.262/.625 against him. He went through a bad stretch, but seems to have come out of it.
Aaron Loup
Aaron, coming back as a September call up, has pitched in 9 games, and has 1 hold. Gibby has been using him as a LOOGY. He doesn't have an earned run this month. Batters have hit .267/.353/.333 with 1 walk and 4 strikeouts in 14 at bats.
Aaron Sanchez
Aaron pitched in 10 games. He's had a win, a loss and a hold. He's had a rough month, 5.63 ERA in 8 innings. Batters have hit .344/.432/.375 with 5 walks and 4 strikeouts. His last 2 appearances have been much better, no hits or walks. I'm hoping he's come out of his little slump.
Liam Hendriks
Liam pitched in 11 games, and has been good. He has a 1.80 ERA in 10 innings. Batters are hitting .275/.268/.475 with 5 doubles, 1 home run, 0 walks and 13 strikeouts. He has pretty hard, but then runs are scoring against him. He has pretty huge splits this year, LHB have a .740 OPS against him, RHP have a .477.
LaTroy Hawkins
LaTroy has only pitched in 4 games, nursing some late season aches and pains. 2 of the appearances were bad, 2 were good. Thankfully it is the last 2 that were good, so I'm hopeful about the playoffs. In 3.2 innings, he has a 7.36 ERA. Batters are hitting .313/.353/.563 with 1 home run, 1 walk and 1 strikeout.
Drew Hutchison
Sigh. Drew made 2 starts, and 1 relief appearance. None of them went well. In total, 0-2, with a 12.96 ERA. Batters hit .400/.455/.900 against him, with 5 home runs, 3 walks and 5 strikeouts. in 40 at bats. He had such a good August (2.45 ERA), I don't know why it all went to shreds this month
Mark Lowe
Mark's pitched in 11 games. He is 1-1, 1 save, a hold, and a blown save with a 2,79. In 9.2 inning, batters hit .182/.200/.424 with 2 home runs, 1 walk and 6 strikeouts.
Ryan Tepera
Ryan has pitched in 8 games this month. He's had 1 save.In 6.2 inning he has a 4.05 ERA. Batters are hitting .160/.250/.280.against him this month, with 1 home run, 2 walks and 5 strike outs.
Also getting work this month:
Bo Schultz: 3 games, 1.2 innings, 27.00 ERA. Batters hit .545/.583/.1.000 in 11 at bats, with 1 home run, 1 walk and 2 strikeout.
Steve Delabar: 3 game, 1.1 innings, 27.00 ERA. In 10 at bats, batters hit .600/.667/.800, with 2 walks and 1 strikeout.
Jeff Francis: 4 games, 6.1 innings 7.11 ERA. In 26 at bats, batters hit .308/.333/.538 with 2 home runs, 1 walk and 2 strike outs.
Chad Jenkins is somewhere in the back of the pen, but hasn't pitched.
