Blue Jays 5, Red Sox 1 (10) - Box
We've gone so many games where the Blue Jays score many more runs than they needed. Tonight, at times, it looked like they were leaving too many runs on the board. In the end, it didn't matter as they exploded in the 10th inning just in time.
Toronto scored four runs in the 10th inning. Josh Donaldson hit a triple off of the very top of the wall that led to the always exciting double challenge. The Blue Jays challenged that the ball left Fenway Park and the Red Sox then challenged the play at third base. Both proved to be called right on the field. After an intentional walk to Edwin Encarnacion, Troy Tulowitzki and Chris Colabello singled to score two more runs and Kevin Pillar hit a sacrifice fly to finally put a crooked number on the board.
The Blue Jays left runners on base in seven of the first nine innings and hit into a double play in an eighth inning. Four of those innings a runner was left on third base. Luckily, the pitching came to play tonight and shut the Red Sox down except for a second inning Travis Shaw home run off of R.A. Dickey.
Dickey pitched very well once again, He only gave up four hits, walked one and struck out four. The home run turned out to be his only blemish on the night. After Dickey, the bullpen pitched four hitless innings allowing only one walk. It was the type of game that could have gone the other way in April or May but the bullpen, especially, bailed the offence out as long as they needed to and it paid off in the end.
Jays of the Day: Dickey (.237) and the bullpen (.340) [Aaron Sanchez (.133), Brett Cecil (.131), Mark Lowe (.059) and Roberto Osuna (.017)] led the way for the Jays. Offensively, Ben Revere (.132), Josh Donaldson (.134) and Troy Tulowitzki (.224) led the way, combining for the first and winning runs.
Jays Suckage: Kevin Pillar (-.285) and Cliff Pennington (-.174) left key runners on base, but the Blue Jays won and the Yankees lost so does it really matter? Not tonight.
Wednesday night, the series ends as Drew Hutchison (13-3, 5.07) faces Joe Kelly (9-6, 4.84) in the rubber match. The Jays will then go to New York for a crucial four game set starting Thursday.
