I’m feeling kind of depressed about the off-season, and I’m not really sure why. It is only December, we shouldn’t be judging the off-season yet. But still, it seems like everyone is making upgrade except for our Jays.
I really wanted Dexter Fowler.
He got $82.5 million over 5 years, $16.5 million a year. I wouldn’t want to go five years but it isn’t a terrible contract.
So what’s next?
I have no idea.
I do like that they are rebuilding the minor league system. With the Red Sox trade for Chris Sale, we saw that there is no way we had enough pieces to make a trade like that, at the moment. We’ve had more than our share of those trades, over the past 3 years, and it’s time to build up the system again.
If I was running things? I’d likely go back to Bautista and Encarnacion and see which one I could get on the most reasonable deal. Which ever one it is, sign him to play first base. Jose, I wouldn’t sign for more than a 2-year deal, if he wants more than that, I’d go back to Edwin with the 4-year, $80 million offer.
I really don’t want a trade for Jay Bruce.
I’d tell Steve Pearce he’s (mostly) a corner outfielder.
And, likely I’d go into spring training thinking that Dalton Pompey will be my other corner outfielder, unless he has a terrible spring. I’d much rather give him a full shot at making Maybe I’d platoon him with Melvin Upton .
It would be nice to get the backup catch figured out soon, but I think that’s something that could likely go right to spring training to get sorted.
And I’d need to find a reliever or two soon. At least one lefty and a right-hander that could fit as a setup guy.
We are far too depressed about how the off-season is going. It is December and I’ve been told the season’s over several times already. But I would like to have something happen to make me feel excited about my team.
What would you do now if you had the keys to the Jays?
