He would have been handy to have today, someone should have pinch hit for Ryan Goins against the lefty reliever.
Anyway Matt Dominguez is the one being called up to take the roster spot Drew Hutchison temporary held. Dominguez was hitting .311/.333/.475 with 2 home runs, 3 walks and 7 strikeouts in 17 games played. He can play first and third, though FanGraphs hates his defense at third, crediting him with a -11.9 UZR/100 last season, when he was an Astros. I'll admit he looked pretty good in the couple of spring training game I saw.
But he might be handy to have at third if Josh Donaldson's leg doesn't heal up quickly.
There were others the Jays could have called up:
- Jesus Montero is hitting .338/.362/.477 with 1 home run, 3 walks and 15 strikeouts in 17 games. He can play first, but likely not that well. He was a highly regarded prospect just a few years ago (top 10 in Baseball America's lists in 2010, 2011 and 2012). He's no longer a catcher, but he's only 26.
- Andy Burns can play any of the infield spots, but he's not hitting at all (.217/.276/.304 in 18 games) at Buffalo.
- Dalton Pompey would have been my choice, but he hasn't played since last Wednesday, still bothered by a sore foot.
Welcome to Toronto Matt. I hope you enjoy your time here.
