Happ has a bad night, Jays lose to Rays

Dan Hamilton-USA TODAY Sports

Rays I don't know 20? 25? Blue Jays 2

Well.....no one got hurt (unless you count J.A. Happ's ERA. This one was over early. In fact, you likely could have still the last echos of Oh Canada when the Rays scored their first runs.

Happ was terrible. He left in the 3rd inning, without getting an out. And, of course, the 2 guys he left on base scored when Dustin Antolin gave up a home run to Curt Casali. Almost need a calculator to figure out his pitching line. 2 innings, 7 hits, 8 earned, 1 walk, 2 strikeouts, 2 home runs. He came into the game with a 2.05 ERA and left with a 3.40 ERA. He gets his first loss of the season (and it is mid-May, so that's ok). He's 5-1.

I'll forgive a bad outing because he's been so good this season, but don't do it again.

We got our first (and quite possibly our last, at least for now) look at Antolin. He didn't impress. 2 innings, 4 hits, 3 earned, 1 walk, 1 k, 1 home run. He showed a fastball that got up to 93 mph (at least that I saw), an ok slider, and a low-80's change.

  • Joe Biagini pitched 2 good innings, without allowing a base runner.
  • Drew Storen gave up a leadoff double but stranded him.
  • Chad Girodo gave up a run in his inning. It would have been more but Ezequiel Carrera made a nice throw from right to cut down a run at the plate.
  • Jesse Chavez gave up a home run (but at least it didn't cost us a game this time) and a single in his inning. Andy Burns, playing third, started a nice double play to get him out of the inning.
We gave up 4 homers to the light hitting Rays.

On offense, we didn't do much at all. Loaded the bases, with 3 2-out walks in the first but didn't score. We didn't get our first hit until Justin Smoak led off the 4th with a single. We scored our run in the 5th, Barney singled, Donaldson doubled, and Bautista singled. That inning ended on an Encarnacion double play.

In the 8th Carrera doubled and Edwin singled him home.

We had 8 hits in all. Barney had 2.

No Jay of the Day, of course. Suckage goes to Happ (-.379). Tulo came close, with a -079, mostly because of the bases loaded strikeout in the first.

Actually we deserve JoD for watching that.

Of note, John Gibbons was tossed out, for his second game in a row, for arguing balls and strikes.

Tomorrow has to be better.

We had a rather amazing 898 comments in the GameThread, considering most of us checked out after the 2nd inning. Lalalaprise led the way. Take a JoD out of petty cash.
