This is the game we were waiting for, and this is what we expected from the Jays this year.
- A bat around first inning. Singles from Kevin Pillar and Josh Donaldson, and a Jose Bautista walk set up a 3-run double for Edwin Encarnacion. Singles from Russell Martin, Darwin Barney and Ezequiel Carrera turned it into a 5 run inning.
- We got 6 more runs in the 3rd inning. Singles from Troy Tulowitzki, Martin and Barney. Then a Pillar double cashed in 2. Donaldson walked, Bautista drove in 1 with a round out. And Edwin homered. The inning ended with us up 11-1.
- We scored our 12th run in the 8th. Back-to-back walks to Donaldson and Bautista and a Smoak single got us to the dozen run mark.
We had 15 hits and 6 walks and, best of all, no strikeouts.
Pillar and Encarnacion had 3 hits each. Martin, Barney and Carrera had 2 each. The only starter not to get a hit was Bautista and he had 2 walks.
On the pitching side, J.A. Happ was great. 7 innings, 6 hits, 1 earned, 1 walk with 5 strikeouts. He's had 6 starts and each one was a 'Quality Start'. I wasn't all that excited about the signing, but it's worked out so far.
Chad Girodo and Ryan Tepera each had a low stress inning, though Ryan gave up 3 hits and a run.
I loved that game. No stress at all. That gives us 3 straight wins and puts us back at .500.
Jays of the Day are Pillar (.115 WPA) and Encarnacion (.182). You could give an honorary mention to everyone in the lineup and Happ. No Suckage Jays.
