Team Canada 7 Blue Jays 1
That was a good game for Team Canada....not such a good game for the Blue Jays.
J.A. Happ and J.P. Howell each had a very rough time of it.
On the flipside, Dalton Pompey had a very good game, reaching base 4 times (2 singles, a walk and reach on an error), he stole a base and he made a very nice diving catch in center field. If Dalton wanted to put on a show for the Jays decision makers, he did a great job.
Also of note, Gregorio Petit came out of the game with a “tight calf” and will be day-to-day. Petit made an error on the first play of the game, allowing Pompey to reach.
Jays pitching:
- J.A. Happ: 1.1 innings, 2 hits, 2 walks, 3 runs, 2 earned. He was having troubles hitting the strike zone. He looked more like the Happ from his first tour of duty with the Jays than the Happ who won 20 games last year.
- T.J. House: 0.2 innings, 2 hits, 2 strikeouts.
- J.P. Howell: His first game action of the spring didn’t go well. 1 inning, 4 hits, a walk and 2 earned, with a strikeout.
- Danny Barnes: 1 inning, 2 strikeouts. He was impressive.
- Ryan Borucki: 2 innings, 2 hits, 1 walk, 2 strikeouts.
- Brett Oberholtzer: 2 innings, 2 hits, 1 earned, 2 strikeouts.
- Conner Greene: 1 inning, 1 hit, 1 walk, 1 earned.
Jays bats:
- Kevin Pillar: 1 for 3.
- Melvin Upton: 1 for 3.
- Troy Tulowitzki: 0 for 2.
- Richard Urena: 0 for 2.
- Kendrys Morales: 0 for 2, 2 k.
- Salty: 0 for 2, walk.
- Justin Smoak: 0 for 2, walk.
- Darwin Barney: 0 for 1, walk.
- Ezequiel Carrera: 0 for 2.
On Canada’s side:
The pitchers only gave up one run. Andrew Albers started, went 2 innings and looked good, allowing just 1 hit. I didn’t think Eric Gagne looked good, but he got out of his inning with 1 hit and 1 walk allowed. Jim Henderson, Scott Mathieson and Jose Fernandez each walked 2 in their respective inning of work. Mathieson gave up the lone Jays run.
Hitting: As mentioned, Pompey had a great day. Justin Morneau was 2 for 5, with 2 RBI. Freddy Freeman went 0 for 3. Rene Tosoni was 2 for 5. Jonathan Malo was 2 for 3 with 2 RBI.
The Jays visit the Orioles tomorrow. Mat Laos is set to start for the Jays. The Orioles beat the Dominican Republic 5-4 today. Jose Bautista was 1 for 1 with 2 walks.
