Blue Jays Roster Moves

We finally know stuff:

  • Melvin Upton, Jr has been released. The team was trying to trade him, but, apparently, didn’t have any takers.
  • Ryan Goins will make the opening roster. Him over Upton doesn’t make a lot of sense to me, but it’s entirely possible there were some clubhouse issues.
  • Ryan Tepera also makes the club.
  • Roberto Osuna starts the season on the 10-day DL, retroactive to March 30. Mike Wilner says cervical spasm. [Update: Retroactive date was changed to April 1.]
  • Dominic Leone makes the team.
  • Dalton Pompey, Bo Schultz and Glenn Sparkman start the season on the 10-day DL as well.
  • It looks like they plan to have Steve Pearce play left field and Justin Smoak first base. That might be part of why Upton was released, Pearce hits lefties well.
  • Ezequiel Carrera will be the fourth outfielder.

It is possible there will be more changes as other teams put players on waivers over the next couple of hours.

Here is the 25-man roster:
