I was wondering when the Jays were going to make the announcement.
Mat Latos has now been called up to make tonight’s start. Ty Kelly loses his active roster spot and his 40-man spot, to make room. Kelly has been on the Blue Jays bench since Tuesday, without getting into a game.
Latos is 29 year old right-hander (I thought he was older). He’s made 2 starts, 9 innings, 7 hits, 1 earned, 6 walks and 9 strikeouts with the Bisons. He pitched 14.2 spring innings, with 13 hits, 11 earned, 5 home runs, 8 walks and 9 strikeouts. It didn’t go well. He’s made 186 major league starts (with 8 relief appearances). He has a career 71-58 record with a 3.60 ERA. Last year he made 12 starts, and 5 relief appearances, split between the Nationals and White Sox. He had a 4.89 ERA in 70 innings, with 74 hits, 11 home runs, 30 walks and 42 strikeouts.
We picked up Kelly off waivers on April 10. It is possible that he’ll clear waivers and stay in the Jays system.
No pressure Mat, but it’s likely we will need a shutout tonight.
Not much else for Jays news at the moment. If you missed it, Lourdes Gurriel picked up a hamstring strain in his first game in Dunedin, yesterday. He’ll be out for a week or two.
And, Madison Bumgarner had a dirt bike accident accident and will be out for awhile. 6 to 8 weeks was mentioned, but the team is saying that no timetable has been set yet.
I haven’t seen tonight’s lineup yet. As soon as I hit publish, it will be out.
