Jays lose to Braves

MLB: Atlanta Braves at Toronto Blue Jays
Ohlman was just late on this tag.

Braves 10 Blue Jays 6

That was unpleasant to watch.

In Mike Bolsinger’s first start, I thought he was lucky, but not bad. Today he was unlucky and bad.

He hit 3 batters, the AL record is 4, I was hoping he could break it. He gave up 8 hits, 2 walks, had 6 runs, 5 earned in 4.2 innings. He didn’t get much help from his defense. Ezequiel Carrera cost him a run by throwing to the wrong base (Ezequiel must own the major league record in throwing to the wrong base. When you don’t have a strong arm, you can make up for it by making the right throw, he doesn’t.) Mike Olhman bounced a throw to second, on a steal, letting the runner go to third. And, in the 5th, there were two RBI ground singles that, I thought, Ryan Goins should have been able to knock down and keep on the infield, saving a run (at least for the moment).

With 9 guys in the bullpen, Bolsinger should have come out of the game earlier.

  • J.P. Howell got the last out of the 5th inning. In the 6th, he gave up a hard hit double. Then the Braves bunted, but Coghlan stayed at the bag at third instead of getting the ball and making the play at first, giving Howell a single against.
  • Leonel Campos came in, got an out and then gave up a home run to dead center, that ball must have been hit as high as it was far. Campos pitched 2.1 innings, allowed 3 hits, 1 walk, hit a batter and had 4 strikeouts as well as 2 earned. I’d think they will be sending him back to Buffalo soon.
  • Aaron Loup got the last 2 outs of the 8th inning, hitting another batter (giving us 5 on the day) but getting 2 strikeouts.
  • Jason Grilli pitched the 9th, but, by that point I couldn’t bring myself to care.

There was a great play by Jose Bautista, picking a hit out of the right field corner, and making a perfect throw to second to get the out on what should have been an easy double. Chris Coghlan made a nice diving grab, of a ground ball, and threw from his knees to second.

On offense, we didn’t do as much against Bartolo Colon as we should have. We had 7 hits against him, in 5 innings, but only scored 3 runs. Colon just seems to throw batting practice fastballs and hopes they are hit at fielders. We got another run off the Braves bullpen.

Travis had 3 hits, 2 doubles. Bautista had 3 hits, 1 double. Smoak had 2 hits, a double and a 9th inning homer. We had 0 fors from Carrera, Morales (1 walk), Goins and Coglan (I think we’ve all had enough of him).

Jay of the Day: Travis (.097 WPA) and Bautista (.086, plus that great throw from the right field corner.

Suckage: Bolsinger (-.356), Morales (-.115) and Goins (-.094).

That ends the win streak, time to start a new one tomorrow.

Hurry back Liriano, I really don’t want to see Bolsinger start again.
