Ryan Goins hits a Grand Slam: Jays beat Brewers

Jays also had homers from Pillar, Bautista and Travis.

MLB: Toronto Blue Jays at Milwaukee Brewers Benny Sieu-USA TODAY Sports

Blue Jays 8 Brewers 4

All I want to talk about is that Ryan Goins grand slam. I mean, other things happened, but who cares. RYAN GOINS HIT A GRAND SLAM.

In Goins’ first at bat, he hit a fly out and his batting average dropped to .200, and, I figured, he’d end the game under .200.

His next at bat, in the 5th, he had a double. Then, in the 6th, he came up with the bases loaded and 1-out, I was hoping he’d get a run in, but he crushed a ball to right. It wasn’t a wall scraper. Home run tracker says it went 407 feet. Who knew he had that in him.

That wasn’t our only homer. Kevin Pillar (437 feet) and Jose Bautista (410) (after a pitch up and in) crushed solo homers in the 4th. And Devon Travis had his own solo homer (415) in the 6th. In between, we got a run on a Luke Maile sac fly.

We had 10 hits. Chris Coghlan, Goins and Bautista had 2 hits each.

Dwight Smith had his first MLB hit, which means he’ll be on the DL by tomorrow.

Marcus Stroman looked very good, through 5 innings and then ran into trouble in in the 6th. He wasn’t very economical on the pitch count and tired in the 6th.

He started the inning off with a 4-pitch walk. Then he got Eric Thames to strikeout. A double later and he was in trouble, but it looked good when he struck out Travis Shaw, but Domingo Santana hit a 3-run homer (that one was a wall scraper, it bounced on the top of the wall and then over).

Marcus ended up going 5.2, with 4 hits, 4 earned, 4 walks and 5 strikeouts. And the 2 home runs.

We got some good work out of the bullpen:

  • Dominic Leone pitched 1.1 perfect, with 2 strikeouts.
  • Aaron Loup pitched an quick inning, also with 2 strikeouts.
  • Jason Grilli pitched the 9th. He ended the perfect relief work by giving up a leadoff double. But, after that, it was 3 up 3 down.

Jays of the Day: Well Marcus has the number (.123 WPA, but I’m not giving him one). Goins (.154) and Bautista (.128) get the awards.

No one gets the suckage number.

That’s a series sweep.....OK it was only a 2-game series but we’ll take it.

Tomorrow is an off-day. We have the Rangers coming to town Friday.

We had 501 comments in the GameThread, not bad for a weekday day game. TimmyMax led us to victory. Great job.
