Blue Jays roster moves

Latos DFA, active Ramirez, claim Valdez, Biagini to start Sunday

The Jays have made a handful of roster moves:

  • Neil Ramirez has been activated, after being claimed off waivers yesterday.
  • Mat Latos gets the DFA treatment. Not a surprise, since he hasn’t been able to get anyone out.
  • The Jays claimed Cesar Valdez off waivers from the A’s. Valdez is a 32 year old, right-handed reliever. He has a 9.64 ERA in 9.1 innings with the A’s this season. He’s given up 14 hits, 10 earned, 4 home runs, 4 walks and 5 strikeouts. So, if you have tickets behind the outfield wall at Rogers, bring your glove.
  • And, on top of all that, the Jays announce that Joe Biagini will start on Sunday. I can’t see him going much more than 3-4 innings, but if they leave him in the rotation for a bit, it shouldn’t take him long to stretch out to 6-7 innings a start. I’d have tried T.J. House first, but we figured that Joe would be in line for a start, if we continued to have injury troubles.

Valdez doesn’t seem like he’d be any better than half a dozen pitchers we have down in Buffalo, but may the Jays see something in him.

Marcus Stroman is still expected to make his next start.
