Russell Martin is going on the DL with nerve inflammation in his left shoulder. Martin says it’s been bothering him since the start of the season.
The Blue Jays have called up Mike Ohlman to take his spot. You’ll likely remember that Ohlman had a good spring training, hitting .259/.310/.630 with 3 home runs.
Down at Buffalo, he is hitting .246/.388/.594 with 7 home runs, 15 walks and 28 strikeouts in 85 PA over 23 games. He’s been splitting time between catcher and DH. The line I read was that he is a good hitter for a catcher and a good catcher for a DH.
He’s thrown out 1 of base stealers for the Bisons.
I’m thinking Luke Maile will get most (perhaps all) of the catching time while Martin is on the DL.
Martin started the season in a slump, but has been one of our better hitters over the last 3 or 4 weeks. We’ll miss him behind the plate, and at bat.
Get better quick Russell.
Update:
Casey Lawrence gets the DFA treatment, to make room on the 40-man for Ohlman. I doubt anyone will grab him off waivers but you never know.
