Poll time: Who was the Jays Player of the Month for May

MLB: Cincinnati Reds at Toronto Blue Jays Dan Hamilton-USA TODAY Sports

The Blue Jays had a great month, as a team, and, of course, a number of Jays players had a great month. I figured we’d have a vote for Jays Player of the Month.

Jose Bautista: Hit .317/.412/.644 with 6 doubles, 9 home runs and 21 RBI. Also scored 23 times, a testament to how good our offense was. In April, I bet I was told over 100 times that he was finished, ‘his bat’s slowed, he’ll never be good again’. You would think people would wait more than a month to decide these things. We’ve all seen slumps before.

Marco Estrada: 3.49 ERA, 4-1. 6 starts, 38.2 innings, 7 walks and 45 strikeouts. I don’t know why his strikeout rate has jumped so much, but I’m not going to complain. His start yesterday, doesn’t count against him for May.

Kendrys Morales: Hit .295/.351/.580 with 7 doubles and 6 home runs, 16 RBI. I didn’t realize he was going good, for some reason, I had it in my head that he was slumping. I’d be OK with that being Kendrys slumping.

Roberto Osuna: 1.42 ERA. 1-0, 8 saves. 2 walks and 17 strikeouts in 12.2 innings. He had a rough April too, but May was great. His last appearance of the month is the one I’ll remember. Tying run on third, winning run on second, 1-out, after a Ryan Goins error, and he gets two strikeouts.

Justin Smoak: Hit .280/.374/.570 with 8 home runs and 22 RBI. He, quietly, had a terrific month. It seems like everyone was talking about Jose and Devon, but Smoak was very good too.

Marcus Stroman: 3.62 ERA, 4-0. In 6 starts he threw 32.1 innings. Had 12 walks and 28 strikeouts. Seems like the average month for Marcus, but his average is pretty good.

Ryan Tepera: 0.54 ERA. 2-0. In 13 games he threw 16.2 innings, had 7 walks 18 strikeouts and only 1 extra base hit. Batters hit .132 against him and slugged .151. He pitched a lot and was great.

Devon Travis: Hit .364/.373/.646 with 16 doubles, 4 home runs, 19 RBI. Set a team record for doubles in the month of May. He had 20 extra base hits and 16 singles. The strange stat is the 1 walk and 20 strikeouts. If you just read that, you’d guess he had a tough month. I don’t know why anyone would throw him a strike. He also stole 2 bases (caught twice too).

Others had a great month too, Joe Smith, Danny Barnes. Russell Martin had a .414 OBP, but then only played in 14 games. Ryan Goins had a grand slam (which might be the moment of the month).
