The Blue Jays have signed Michael Saunders to a minor league deal.
Saunders was hitting .205/.257/.360 with 6 home runs before the Phillies gave up on him.
You all will remember he was a Jay for the 2015 and 2016 seasons. He missed almost all of 2015, after losing a disagreement with a sprinkler head in spring training. 2016 started well. He was hitting .298/.372/.551 with 16 home runs, in the first half of the season, which earned him a spot on the AL All-Star team. The second half wasn’t quite so great. He hit .178/.282/.357.
His defense isn’t great, as you’ll remember.
Saunders gives us a little bit of depth, but I’d rather see them use Dwight Smith or Dalton Pompey (if he can get healthy), if they need ‘depth’. But then, I’m not running things, I try not to guess what the team might do at any given time.
Welcome back Michael.
