Keegan Matheson from MLB.com has tweeted that the Blue Jays have traded for Tom Koehler from the Marlins, sending minor leaguer Osman Gutierrez to Florida.
Koehler is a 31-year old right-handed starter. He’s in his 6th MLB season. Career he is 36-53 in 146 games, 132 starts, with a 4.43 ERA. In 767.1 inning, he has allowed 755 hits, 93 home runs, 316 walks and 586 strikeouts.
This season he’s been up and down between the majors and Triple A. He’s had a rough time in the majors. 7.92 ERA (6.89 FIP) in 12 starts. 55.2 innings. 67 hits, 15 home runs, 29 walks and 44 strikeouts. The home runs have been a problem.
In Triple-A, he has a 2.16 ERA in 8 games, 7 starts. In 41.2 innings, allowing 35 hits, 6 homers, 15 walks and 60 strikeouts.
He’s making $5.75 million this year. He’s arbitration eligible next year and could be a free agent in 2019.
I’d imagine he’ll be in our rotation.
Gutierrez is a 21-year old, right-handed pitcher. He’s been pitching in Lansing this year and not doing well. He has a 7.85 ERA in 18 starts. 78 innings, 89 hits, 9 homers, 52 walks and 71 strikeouts.
Osman was on Matt’s ‘just missed out list’. He said:
If this series was the Top 41 rather than Top 40, Gutierrez would have made it as he was the first man out, and landing towards the backend of my own list. He put a nice season statistically for Bluefield, posting a 3.88 ERA with 66 strikeouts against 21 walks in 65 innings. The downside is that having spent three years in the Dominican, he's already 22 without having made it to full season ball, and 21 is relatively advanced age for rookie ball. He should move up to Lansing for 2017, or I should say has to to be a legitimate prospect.
On the edge of our list this year, but, with the year he’s having, he wouldn’t have been this year.
