Jays Roster Moves: Cruz, Guerrieri, Petricka, Shafer removed from the 40-man

MLB: Tampa Bay Rays at Toronto Blue Jays Kevin Sousa-USA TODAY Sports

There are more Blue Jays roster moves:

Rhiner Cruz, Taylor Guerrieri and Jake Petricka all have cleared waivers and are now free agents.

Justin Shafer cleared waivers and has been outrighted to Buffalo.

Rhiner pitched 3.1 innings for the Jays this year. He pitched 8.2 innings for Buffalo with a 1.04 ERA.

Guerrieri got into 9 games with the Jays, had a 4.66 ERA in 9.2 innings. In Buffalo he worked 57.1 innings, had a 5.18 ERA, with 22 walks and 41 strikeouts. He was a first round draft pick by the Rays back in 2011 and was a Baseball America top 100 prospect in 2012 and 2013, hitting spot 90 and 62 respectively those two years.

Petricka pitched in 41 games for the Jays. He had a 4.53 ERA. In 45.2 innings he allowed 59 innings, allowed 59 hits, 16 walks and 41 strikeouts. He had flashes where he looked very good, he stuck out the side against Cleveland on September 9th. But then had days were he couldn’t get people out. He threw hard, averaging 94.9 MPH on his fastball, but was inconsistent.

Shafer pitched in 6 games with the Jays. In the minors, he split time between New Hampshire and Buffalo, putting up a 1.13 ERA in 55.2 innings. allowing 39 hits, 21 walks and 49 strikeouts. I’m glad he’s staying in the system.

There will be more moves coming, by my count we are at 36 on the 40-man roster, so room to add guys to protect them from the Rule 5 draft.

Update:

I should have mentioned that the Jays have activated Troy Tulowitzki and Brandon Drury from the 60-day DL, which is what brings the 40-man to 36.
