Update:
The Jays did make more moves:
RHP Trent Thornton, RHP Hector Perez, RHP Yennsy Diaz, and RHP Jacob Waguespack as well as Murphy.
That fills our 40-roster, so we won’t be picking anyone up in the Rule 5 draft. And it leaves a few good players available to other teams. Jordan Romano, Max Pentecost, Travis Bergen, Jackson McClelland, Forrest Wall and Joe Harris, among others, are all left open for some team to grab.
- Thornton came over in the Aledmys Diaz trade.
- Perez came from the Astros in the Osuna trade. He had a 3.76 ERA, with 133 strikeouts and 64 walks in 115 innings between high A and AA in the Astros and Jays system this season.
- Diaz was number 23 on our prospect list before the season. He had a 3.02 ERA in 27 games, 25 starts split between Lansing and Dunedin. He had 53 walks and 125 strikeouts in 147.1.
- Waguespack came to us in the Aaron Loup trade. He’s 24. He had a 4.80 ERA split between AA and AAA in the Phillies and Jays system this year. In 122 innings he allowed 46 walks and 112 strikeouts.
I’ll admit a always worry about losing players in the draft and it rarely happens, but I think, if I was running another team, I might consider Penecost or McClelland.
I’m sure there are more moves to come but Shi Davidi tells us that Patrick Murphy has been added to the Blue Jays 40-man roster.
Murphy, 23, a right-handed pitcher, spent most of this season with Dunedin, making one start in New Hampshire. He had a 2.65 ERA in 27 starts. In 152.2 innings, he allowed 130 hits, 53 walks and 141 strikeouts.
He was number 20 on our top prospect list before last season.
