Jays claim Oliver Drake from Rays

MLB: Chicago White Sox at Minnesota Twins Brad Rempel-USA TODAY Sports

The Blue Jays have claimed Oliver Drake off waivers from the Rays.

Drake is a 31-year old right-handed pitcher. He’s bounced around a fair bit, he’s been in the majors for 4 seasons, but has played for 6 major league teams, Orioles, Brewers, Twins, Angels, Cleveland and he was a Jay for a few moments this year. I honestly didn’t remember. We picked him up off waivers from the Angels on July 26th and lost him to the Twins off waivers on August 3rd.

He has a 4.59 ERA in 135 relief appearances. In 137.1 innings he’s allowed 142 hits, 58 walks with 151 strikeouts. I like the strikeout number. FanGraphs says he averaged 93.0 MPH on his fastball. He also threw a splitter, sliders and a curve.

To make room the Jays DFAed Mark Leiter. I think we all guessed that Mark wouldn’t make it to spring training on our roster. Mark had a 13.50 ERA in 6.2 innings with us this year.

Tis the season of minor upgrades.
