Blue Jays DFA Ezequiel Carrera

MLB: Spring Training-Toronto Blue Jays at Tampa Bay Rays Jonathan Dyer-USA TODAY Sports

When I got the press release for the Seung-Hwan Oh I didn’t notice the little note at the end saying Ezequiel Carrera was designated for assignment to make room for Oh.

Ezequiel played in today’s spring game. I’m surprised that they choose to drop him from the 40-man. We are deep in outfielders and I did wonder what the plan for Carrera was, but I thought it would be a decision made at the end of spring training. Keep him around in case of injury.

Ezequiel was a Jay for 3 seasons. He played 332 games, hit .267/.336/.380 with 17 home runs and 19 steals. Baseball Reference has him at a -0.6 WAR for those three years. Fangraphs was a little friendlier, putting him at a 1.6 WAR.

I won’t miss watching him in the field, but I did like him at the plate and he could be fun on the base paths too.

The Jays will owe Carrera $300,000, 30 days worth of his $1.9 million contract.

Sorry to see you go Ezequiel, I hope things work out well.

Also in the press release, Oh’s contract is for $1.75 million in 2018 with a $2.5 million vesting option for 2019, based on appearances.
