Quick Jays Recap: Good start from Jaime Garcia

Teoscar Hernandez homers again.

MLB: Spring Training-Tampa Bay Rays at Toronto Blue Jays
Missed him by that much.

Rays 5 Blue Jays 3

We got a very nice start from Jaime Garcia. He went 4.2, allowed just 4 singles, no walks with 6 strikeouts. He had 2 earned runs, both helped out by some crappy Jays defense. We had a bad day with the gloves. Course, Jaime didn’t help himself out when he didn’t cover the plate on a wild pitch on strike three. The runner from second scored, while the batter reached. The other earned run scored after Jaime left the game. Garcia has a 2.63 ERA this spring.

Other pitchers:

  • Roberto Osuna gave up a single to allow the second earned run against Garcia, before getting the 3rd out of the 5th inning. 1.42.
  • Ryan Tepera had another rough outing, 2 hits, including a triple, 1 earned, with 2 strikeouts, in 1.1. 9.00.
  • Danny Barnes is also having a tough spring. 1.0, 2 hits, a home run, 2 earned, 1 walk, 1 k. 7.88.
  • Craig Breslow got the last 2 outs of the 8th, with a strikeout.
  • Al Alburquerque: 1 inning, 1 k. 3.86. He seems to have been forgotten of late.

Hitters:

Once again we didn’t get much for offense. We only had 5 hits. The big one was another Teoscar Hernandez homer, his 4th of the spring. He’s making it tough for the Jays to send him down.

  • Danny Espinosa: 1 for 3, 1 k. .256. He let a ball go under his glove for a “single”, one of the hits against Garcia.
  • Cavan Biggio: 0 for 1, k. .333.
  • Josh Donaldson: 0 for 2, 1 walk, 1 k. .167. Still waiting for a hard hit ball, but not worried. No no.
  • Brad Jones: 1 for 1, double.
  • Russell Martin: 1 for 3. .188. Made a nice tag at the plate.
  • Steve Pearce: 1 for 3, double (just before Teoscar’s homer). .318. Quietly having a nice spring.
  • Teoscar Hernandez: 1 for 2, homer, walk, k. .348. The walk was nice to see.
  • Aledmys Diaz: 0 for 3. .220.
  • Jason Leblebijian: 0 for 3, k. .250. He had a tough day with the glove. No official errors but slow decisions in the field.
  • Roemon Fields: 0 for 3, k. .350. Almost beat out a bunt single.
  • Gift Ngoepe: 0 for 2, walk, 2 k. .189.

The Jays drop to 12-14 on the spring. Tonight the other half of the split squad goes to beautiful Bradenton, Florida (with a very nice downtown for shopping and eating) to play the Pirates. No lineup yet, but Vlad and Bo will be playing. The game will be on MLB.TV.
