Quick Recap: Rough day for the Jays pitchers

MLB: Spring Training-Toronto Blue Jays at New York Yankees Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports

Blue Jays 6 Yankees 13

So that wasn’t a fun debut for a couple of new Blue Jays Sams.

Sam Gaviglio pitched an inning, gave up 3 hits, 2 earned, 1 walk and 2 strikeout, in his first appearance after being picked up in trade.

Sam Moll was only able to get one out (though there was an error and a ball lost in the sun that cost him), giving up 4 hits, 6 runs, 5 earned, 2 walks, with 1 home run.

I don’t think we’ll be seeing either in Toronto unless things go really bad this season.

Other pitchers:

  • Aaron Loup: 1 inning, 1 hit, 1 earned, 1 walk, 1 k. 2.70 ERA. Gave up an RBI double to a RHB who he would have, likely, pitched around during the season to face the LHB coming up next.
  • Chris Rowley: 3 innings, 1 hit (a Didi Gregorius homer), 2 earned, 1 walk, 5 strikeouts. Ignoring the homer, it was a very good appearance.
  • Carlos Ramirez: 1 inning, 2 hits, 2 earned, 1 home run (Giancarlo Stanton took him very deep). It was his first appearance in a long while, but looks like he is healthy again.
  • Ty Tice: 0.2, 1 walk, 1 k. First Jay pitcher not to give up a run.
  • Murphy Smith: 1 inning, 1 hit, 2 strikeouts.

Hitters

Offensively, it was the Yangervis Solarte show, he went 4 for 4, with a double. He’s hitting .208 now.

  • Curtis Granderson: 1 for 4, double, 2 k. .300.
  • Teoscar Hernandez: 0 for 1. .327.
  • Justin Smoak: 0 for 4, k. .200.
  • Randal Grichuk: 1 for 3, homer, walk. .286.
  • Kendrys Morales: 2 for 4. .231.
  • Kevin Pillar: 2 for 4, homer. .432. He also lost a fly in the sun.
  • Danny Espinosa: 1 for 4, k. .239.
  • Aledmys Diaz: 1 for 3. .234.
  • Gift Ngoepe: 0 for 1. .175.
  • Reese McGuire: 1 for 4. .250.

Jays are now 13-16.

Tomorrow the Jays host the Pirates. The game isn’t on MLB.TV. After that, two games in Montreal, then a day off and then REAL BASEBALL.
