On March 29, 2008, SB Nation approved the account of Rincewind, a moniker inspired by the Discworld novels of Terry Pratchett. The holder of that account: Tom Dakers.
In the 10 years that have followed, Tom has gone from interested reader of Hugo’s fabulous writings, to interim-manager of Bluebird Banter while Hugo had to take a leave of absense, to being a co-manager when he came back, and finally taking over the full responsibilities of running the site when Hugo ultimately had to step away.
Since joining this site 10 years ago, Tom’s counting stats are pretty amazing:
FanShots: 870
FanPosts: 64
Stories Published: 6687 (and counting)
Recs given/received: 31/6619 (that’s not a typo - Tom, the “rec” button is right beside the “reply” button)
Without the presence of Tom, there is no Bluebird Banter. He has brought this site to what it is today, and continues to be an invaluable asset to this site.
So I am officially calling March 29 “Tom Dakers Appreciation Day”*, something I hope will turn into an annual holiday where we all shower Tom with all of the praises he so rightfully deserves, and doesn’t get nearly enough of.
Thank you Tom for all you do.
*Today just so happens to be Opening Day, and the Jays are retiring Roy Halladay’s number in what I’m sure will be a very emotional ceremony. As such, today may officially become Roy Halladay Day. If that’s the case, Tom Dakers Appreciation Day will be moved to some other day.
