So that was definitely better.
We had hits. 9 hits. And some hard hit balls. Josh Donaldson made his first decent contact of the season, doubling off the left field wall. Justin Smoak was 3 for 4, with a double and 2 RBI. Even Luke Maile chipped in, hitting an RBI single (he also took a walk).
Kevin Pillar had a walk (yay), a single, and a very nice catch in CF (he also struck out after being up 3-0). And he scored a big insurance run in the 8th, getting a single (after Solarte’s homer), stealing second and then third, and then stealing home, while Dellin Betances threw wild to the plate trying to catch him. That might be the best play we get this season. It was perfect.
And Yangervis Solarte hit the game winning home run in the 8, a blast to center field. Just crushed.
Marco Estrada had a very good start, 7 innings, 4 hits, 3 walks and 2 strikeouts. The unfortunate part was that 2 of the 4 hits were home runs, but he kept the Yankees off-balance most of the game. I was very impressed.
Ryan Tepera pitched a nice quick 8th inning, give up Just a walk. Roberto Osuna had a 3 up 3 down 9th for his first save of the season.
Jays of the Day: Tepera (.111 WPA), Smoak (.209), Solarte (.088), Maile (.138), Osuna and Pillar.
Suckage: Diaz (-.080, 0 for 4, 2 k) and Ngoepe (-.079, 0 for 4, 3 k).
