Blue Jays call up Darnell Sweeney

MLB: Cincinnati Reds-Media Day Orlando Ramirez-USA TODAY Sports

The Blue Jays have selected Darnell Sweeney to fill the roster spot opened up by the Steve Pearce trade, or at least that’s what Ben Wagner has tweeted. I’ll admit it surprised me. Sweeney, of course, is also added to the 40-man.

Sweeney is hitting .232/.314/.439 with 6 home runs, 19 walks and 59 strikeouts. Over his last 10 games he’s hit .200. He’s played just about every position for the Bisons, LF, 3B, 2B, SS and RF.

Sweeney was a minor league free agent signing, back at the start of April. He’s been in the Phillies, Dodgers and Reds’ farm systems.

27 years old, a switch hitter, he played 37 games with the Phillies in 2015, hitting .176/.286/.353. His career minor league numbers are ..269/.341/.423 with 62 homers in 733 games, over 7 seasons.

I really figured it would be Lourdes Gurriel who would get the call, he was up last week, but that was just to fill in while Sam Gaviglio was on Paternity leave.
