If i had known that the Blue Jays were going to continue losing in such a frustrating manner, i would have just carried on drinking from my birthday on Friday...
We just can’t seem to catch a break- if its not the rotation having a meltdown, its the offence going to sleep, the defence acting like circus clowns or the bullpen exploding like a Michael Bay movie.
With yesterday’s latest loss to the Tigers, the Jays sit at 25-33. Though we are only into the first third of the season, its already causing angst among the fan base. Its obviously got to Gibby as well, as yesterday was the first time this season he didn’t front to the media. And who can blame him really? Right now the team is shambolic.
The Jays have now lost for the 15th time over the last 19 games, while the club’s overall losing streak is now a season-high five games. We are now a season-high eight games below .500, and we have just one series win since the start of May.
The Jays find themselves 14 1/2 games out of first place in the American League East. The deficit for the second AL Wild Card spot is almost as large, with Toronto trailing the Mariners and Astros by 11 games.
Even when compared to last year’s disappointing season, the Jays are three games behind that pace with a 25-33 record vs. a 2017 mark of 28-30 at the same point.
As Peter Sarsgaard says in Jarhead: ‘Welcome to the suck’...
And as we don’t appear to be allowed to have nice things, we have to look elsewhere for them.
I could watch Freddie Freeman play all day:
Will a trade for JA Happ-en?
Ben Nicholson-Smith says that given the Jays current trajectory, JA Happ’s trade value couldn’t be higher.
Maybe he is worth cashing in as both he and Estrada are free agents at the end of the season?
Infinite injuries
And to top off the Jays poop sundae with a cherry on top. we have more injuries:
Firstly Teoscar Hernandez; I saw that he left the game with an injured foot, and i wonderd if he got it hustling after a line drive...but then i thought don’t be silly, its Teoscar; he merely meanders around the outfield. Turns out he fouled a ball off his foot.
Then i heard about Dalton Pompey aka ‘DL Dalton’ who suffered a thumb ligament tear.
He can’t seem to catch a break. he missed all of 2017 with concussion symptoms, then injured a knee on a rehab assignment and earlier this year had a wrist problem.
I love Dalton but he reminds me of Samuel L Jackson’s Mr Glass in the movie Unbreakable... which seems an ironic title for Dalton
And finally... (Marts reaches for the scotch and starts sobbing) Vladimir Guerrero Jr. got injured running to first base. I think we are all hoping and praying it is something minor. Knowing our season so far, it wouldn’t surprise me if on reaching hospital they found out Vlad had something like necrotizing fasciitis...
In other injury news:
Richard Urena will be out for the next 7-to-10 days because of a laceration on his right middle finger. Urena was spiked during a game against Triple-A Charlotte and the cut required three stitches to repair.
Steve Pearce has finally started a hitting progression. Pearce has begun to take dry swings, but it’s still not clear when he will begin taking batting practice and there is no timetable for his return to the big league roster. Pearce has not played since May 3 because of a strained oblique muscle.
Josh Donaldson, who was placed on the 10-day disabled list Friday night with left calf tightness, is going through normal hitting and throwing routines. He will progress through running drills once he is determined to be asympomatic, as he expects to return to the Toronto lineup on Friday against Baltimore.
Right-hander Marcus Stroman threw a bullpen session on Saturday morning for the first time since he was placed on the DL with right shoulder fatigue.
Lourdes Gurriel Jr. is day to day with left hamstring tightness. He is not expected to require a stint on the DL.
I imagine the next injury will see one of out players hit by a rally goose falling from the sky....
