Before the season I figured Luke Maile would be gone by now. He was so bad with the bat, last year, I figured that, by mid-season, Maile would be released and Danny Jansen would be up.
It hasn’t happened, Maile’s hitting much better, .234/.324/.375 with 3 home runs, 17 walks and 47 strikeouts in more plate appearances than he had all of last year.
He had a great start to the season, he was hitting .351/.415/.459 at the end of April. Since then his numbers haven’t been great, .187/.290/.341. But that is still a lot better than last year’s line of .146/.176/.231.
His defense has been fine. He’s shown a very good arm, throwing out 38% of base stealers. He seems to get along with the pitchers. I’d be curious to know how many of the pitchers would prefer to have Maile over Martin behind the plate.
Maile seems like a great guy. I think you have to be a great guy to keep a job as a backup catcher.
The Write-In Luke Maile campaign to get Luke into the All-Star game was unsuccessful. I’d be curious to see how many votes he got. Somewhat less than the 2.36 million votes Wilson Ramos received (and less than the half million votes fifth place finisher Yan Gomes had).
