Blue Jays mid-term report card: Grade Aledmys Diaz’ first half

Aledmys Diaz was signed by the Blue Jays to be a utility infielder. He and Yangervis Solarte were both picked up to improve our bench, after we saw way too much of Darwin Barney and Ryan Goins last year. With an infield full of players who spend a fair bit of time on the DL, improving the bench was a priority.

Instead of being a bench player, Aledmys has been a fulltime shortstop. He’s played almost everyday, except for the short time he was out on the DL.

Aledmys is yet another who started the season poorly. He hit .183/.230/.354 in April. Since May 1 he’s hit .274/.303/.430 in 40 games. He’s been in a bit of a slump of late, hitting .182 over his past 7 games. It would be nice if he would take a walk more than once a week, but that’s life.

His defense has looked good to me. FanGraphs has him at a 5.0 UZR/150 which matches what I’m seeing. I really enjoy watching him play defense.

He has lost a bit of playing time with the team wanting to she more of Lourdes Gurriel. I’m ok with Diaz getting a little less playing time, not that he’s been bad, I just think he’d we’d be better off if he was more of a part timer.
