The Blue Jays called up Chris Rowley for today’s game and sent Ryan Borucki down.
Rowley joins the pen for today, as we are short rested arms in the pen. Rowley has a 3.45 ERA in 16 starts at Buffalo this season. In 94 innings, he’s allowed 91 hits, 10 homers, 41 walks and 58 strikeouts.
You’ll remember him from last year. He pitched in 6 fames, making 3 starts, with a 6.75 ERA.
Ryan Borucki goes down, but don’t panic, he’ll be back up in 10 days to make his next start.
Jamie Garcia is with the team but not activated. That could happen tomorrow. The plan is for him to work out of the pen in the future. That looks like a good plan from here.
Rhiner Cruz goes in the 60-day DL to make room for Rowley.
After the All-Star break the starting rotation will be Sam Gaviglio, Marcus Stroman, J.A. Happ, Marco Estrada and Borucki. Of course, all of that is pending trades.
Aaron Sanchez is still throwing ‘long toss’ so it will be a couple more weeks (at least) before he’s back with the team.
In other news:
- Ryan Tepera will pitch in New Hampshire tomorrow.
- Dan Shulman reports that Gibby said he was ok with Gurriel throwing home in yesterday’s game, “it caught me by surprise, (but) shows me he’s in tune with everything”.
- Teoscar’s heel is ‘a little tender’.
Gaviglio gets today’s start. He pitched Wednesday, so is on very short rest, but then he only threw 48 pitches. I’m not expecting him to go deep into the game. 3-4 innings might be the most we can expect. I’d imagine they are planning Rowley to do 2-3 innings as well.
Today’s lineup. Teoscar’s back after missing yesterday with a sore heel. Smoak is back at first. Lourdes hits leadoff and plays second. And Maile plays the day game after a night game.
We've got an early one for you today! @TeoscarH returns & @yunitogurriel moves into the leadoff spot. pic.twitter.com/DvZSrg8U2x
