Blue Jays mid-term report card: Grade Marco Estrada’s first half

MLB: Toronto Blue Jays at Houston Astros Erik Williams-USA TODAY Sports

So like many of the Blue Jays, Marco Estrada’s season started off pretty crappy and improved.

His first two starts were good, 13 innings and 4 ERA. The next four starts he had an 8.53 ERA in 19 innings.

Then there was one good start, 6 shutout innings.

That was followed by 4 straight losses, butting up a 6.53 ERA.

But June was very good, 5 starts with a 2.35 ERA in 30.2 innings.

And then he goes into the All-Star break with an injury.

All in he has a 4.72 ERA and a 4-7 record in 17 starts. In 89.2 innings he’s allowed 15 home runs, 25 walks and 70 strikeouts. He has a 4.59 FIP and a 5.19 xFIP.

After being very consistent in his first two seasons as a Blue Jay, Marco has been up and down the last couple of years.

Marco is one of my favorite pitchers to watch, I like watching guys who can get by without a big fastball. Marco is the kind of pitcher who I could see becoming a pitching coach after his career, but then he’s made enough money as a player he doesn’t need to take a rather low paying job, that takes him away from his family.
