Blue Jays mid-term report card: Grade John Axford’s first half

John Axford, like most of our relievers has had his good days and bad.

After last night, he has a 4.69 ERA in 44 games, 48 innings. He’s allowed 43 hits, 6 homers, 20 walks with 47 strikeouts. I like the strikeouts. He walks more guys than I’d like.

I like that he’s able to go more than an inning, he’s pitched more than an inning 11 times this year. 2.1 was his longest outing. Obviously, normally when he goes more than an inning, it has gone well (last was an expectation to the rule). You wouldn’t send him out for a second inning unless the first inning went well. Only twice has he given up runs when going more than an inning.

His FIP (4.20) and xFIP (3.87) are both better than his ERA.

After his appearance May 13th, he had a 1.31 ERA (making a good first impression never hurts). Batters were hitting .222/.288/.264.

Since then his ERA is 7.24 in 26 games. Batters hit .252/.344/.458 in that game. I didn’t realize he had been that bad over the past couple of months. First impressions still ringing in my ears.

He has a 0.0 bWAR and a 0.1 fWAR.

I like Axford, he seems like a good guy. He’s gotta be a good guy, he’s Canadian.
