Late game comeback, Jays beat White Sox

Lourdes extends multi-game hitting streak and left the game with an injury.

MLB: Toronto Blue Jays at Chicago White Sox David Banks-USA TODAY Sports

Blue Jays 7 White Sox 4

The good news: Lourdes Gurriel had his 11th straight multi-hit game, setting a new team record.

The bad news: Lourdes was hurt in the 9th inning. He went to second on an RBI hit and tried to dodge the tag and went down in pain. It looked badd but he walked off the field, with minimum help. I’m hoping it isn’t too serious.

So, basically cut and paste recap for any Ryan Borucki recap. Borucki was great, our offense wasn’t.

Borucki went 6, allowed 6 hits, 2 earned, 1 walk with 5 strikeouts. He gave up a run in the 5th on a single, a bunt single, a sac bunt and a ground out. He tired a bit in the 6th, giving up his other run on a single, walk and single.

If we could score for the guy.....

We scored 1 run while he was in the game. Aledmys Diaz homered in the 5th inning.

We did score after he left the game, which saved Borucki from getting an L, but it would be nice to get him a win one day. We scored:

  • 1 in the 8th: Brandon Drury was hit by pitch to start the inning. An out later Luke Maile walked. Another out later, Lourdes Gurriel had his second hit of the game to drive in Drury and make it a 1-run game.
  • 5 in the 9th: Teoscar Hernandez led off with a homer to tie the game. Kendrys Morales was hit by pitch. Diaz double. Drury doubled to give us a 2-run lead. And Lourdes got his 3rd hit of the day to drive in Drury, but then he was injured going to 2nd.

We had 10 hits on the day. 2 homers.

Lourdes had 3 hits. Diaz 2.

Luis Santos pitched 2 innings of relief, giving up 1 run on a home run. He gets the win.

Ryan Tepera pitched the 9th and did better than yesterday. He gave up a solo homer and a single. He gets a save.

To put Gurriel’s feat in context:

Of that list Hornsby, Herman, Perez, Waner and Rice are all in the Hall of Fame. Shoeless Joe would be in the Hall if he hadn’t been banned for his part in the ‘Black Sox’ scandal. Hornsby and Waner would be on high on the list of the best players ever to play the game (Jackson would be high on that list too).

Jays of the Day: Diaz (.329 WPA), Teoscar (.233), Drury (.155) and I’m giving one to Lourdes and to Borucki.

Suckage: Justin Smoak (-.141,1 for 4) and Grichuk (-.111).
