Bad night for Stroman, Jays lose

MLB: New York Mets at Toronto Blue Jays John E. Sokolowski-USA TODAY Sports

Mets 6 Blue Jays 3

This was Marcus Stroman’s third start since coming back from the DL. His first two starts were good. This one, not so much. He had trouble keeping near the strike zone and when he found it he was hit pretty hard.

The first couple of innings he gave up a leadoff walk, but got double plays, so they didn’t hurt. But he wasn’t so lucky later.

In total, 4.2 innings, 6 hits, 1 home run, 6 earned, 4 walks and 2 strikeouts. Hopefully it was a one-off and he’ll be back pitching like he should next time.

We got to see the pitchers who were called up today. Luis Santos went 1.1, allowed 2 hits with 2 strikeouts and didn’t give up a run. Rhiner Cruz pitched out the last 2 innings, allowed just 1 hit with 2 strikeouts. And Aaron Loup pitched an inning. He gave up a single and he struck out Jose Bautista, but the ball got away from Russell Martin and Jose made it to first base.

Offensively, we didn’t do much. 9 hits but 6 of them came from Kendrys Morales and Russell Martin. Kendrys scored all 3 of our runs. He had a homer, a double and a single, as close to the cycle as you’ll see him get. Russell Martin was 3 for 3, all singles, with a walk.

If some of the other guys could have chipped in, we could have made a game of it.

Lourdes Gurriel had 2 RBI, driving in Morales with a single and with a sac fly.

Getting 0 fors were Granderson (0 for 5, 1 k), Smoak (0 for 4, 1 k), Grichuk (0 for 4, 1 k) and Diaz (0 for 4). Diaz hit the ball hard twice but right into gloves. Grichuck a couple of decently hit balls too.

Jose Bautista was 1 for 5, and reached on the strikeout. He also misplayed a ball at the right field wall, which really should have been an error, but the official scorer decided to have mercy on him.

He got a very nice ovation for his first at bat and his last at bat. It was good to see him again.

Jays of the Day: Morales (.171 WPA) and Martin (.150). Martin brought up his average to .178. Morales to .238. When Kendrys is hitting, he makes it look so easy, nice, under control swing, just makes good contact. He just doesn’t do it enough.

Suckage: Stroman (-.350), Grichuk (-.165), Smoak (-.105), Diaz (-.107) and Granderson (-.096).
