Today’s rearrangement of deck chairs on the Titanic...err, roster moves

Probably best to avoid telling Gibby the ship is sinking

Shi Davidi has the details for us:

  • The Jays are signing RHP Mike Hauschild, recently released from AAA, to follow Tyler Clippard and essentially be the de facto starter following the opener
  • Ken Giles is activated, as expected, with Darnell Sweeney and Dwight Smith Jr. optioned to AAA to make room for the two pitchers on the 25 man roster

Unless I’ve missed something, there’s another shoe to drop not listed there, as the Jays need to open a 40 man spot for Hauschild; the Giles trade having filled up the 40 man with Darnell Sweeney and Brandon Cumpton backfilling the spots opened through the trades of Aaron Loup and John Axford.

Upfate: Davidi corrected that Sweeney was in fact DFA’d and not optioned.

Apparently Luis Santoa and Cumpton weren’t enough AAA filler for one pitching staff, so tonight fans get a new permutation of Bullpen Day. Frankly, the Jays owe the fans who are making the trek to Safeco a lot better. At this point, I have no idea why they continue to do nonsense like this instead of calling up Sean Reid-Foley, but more on that tomorrow.
