We haven’t done one of these in a long time, but I figured, with all the rumors that have been flying around about Gibby’s job that it might be a good time to ask.
The team has been terrible lately, I’m not blaming Gibby. We have a mess at the moment. The starting rotation is, well I don’t know who the rotation is at the moment. If you see someone googling blisters, odds are they were part of our rotation.
And we have have a pretty decent infield on the DL. Lourdes Gurriel should be back soon. Yangervis Solarte? I have no idea when he’ll be back. Brandon Drury? I’m doubting he’ll be back this year. And we continuously get told that Josh Donaldson and Troy Tulowitzki are running, but I’m not sure in what direction.
The outfield is a totally different issue:
- Teoscar Hernandez plays defense like someone who hasn’t seen the game before. The Sun has a story quoting Tim Lieper saying that anyone who thinks Hernandez can’t become a good outfielder are ‘idiots’. I don’t see why he shouldn’t be a good outfielder, but he’s played the position for a long time, but he hasn’t figured it out yet, I don’t know why we would think he will suddenly figure it.
I don’t know it he is taking his defensive problems to the plate with him, but he’s hit .182/.273/.390 over his last 22 games. The crappy hitting has been going on for a long while now. If he isn’t hitting and can’t field, I don’t know what is going to happen with him.
- Kevin Pillar is hitting again. .304/.322/.500 over his last 16 games, but he’s had his moments.....we talked about it enough yesterday, but he’s been in the majors long enough now that I would expect him not to do stupid things.
- Randal Grichuk. His numbers still aren’t great, .227.285/.456 on the season. Those aren’t numbers that I want in the middle of the order. He’s had such a terrible start, but he only been ok since. So far in August he’s hitting .265/.286/.456 which is ok, but not what I’d like out of a corner outfielder.
The bullpen has been overworked and, well, a mess. I don’t blame Gibby for that.
I can’t imagine any manager winning with this group.
But I can understand the front office wondering if he isn’t the right choice for a rebuild.
I’m a fan, I like Gibby. I think he’s the right guy for the moment. The future, I’m not so sure.
