The Blue Jays have placed Russell Martin on the Paternity List.

I imagine there is an administrative reason for putting him on the list, but since it is September and we have 3 other catchers on the roster, I don’t know what that might be. They could just let him go (apparently they did, I see that he left the team Sunday).

And, since he isn’t playing, I’m sure the team won’t mind if he stays a little longer than the 3 days allowed by the list.

John Lott, in the Athletic, wrote about Russell’s soon to come baby girl:

Martin left Sunday for Tampa, where, if all unfolds on schedule, he and girlfriend Élisabeth Chicoine will welcome their first child on Tuesday.

Baseball’s going to quickly become not the most important thing in the world for me,” Martin said with a smile.

They haven’t settled on a name for their daughter.

“We’ve got three right now,” he said. “We’re going to wait to see the baby’s face to decide.”

Congratulations to Russell and his girlfriend. They’ll never have a good night’s sleep again.

There was a comedian who talked about the doctor wearing a catcher’s glove and looking like Johnny Bench (yeah it was a long time ago) at the birth of his child. Maybe Russell could bring his glove for the doctor.
