Edwin Encarnacion turns 36 today.

When we traded Scott Rolen to the Reds for Josh Roenicke, Zach Stewart and Edwin, no one would have guessed that Edwin would be the last one standing. Course, Edwin did spend 3 weeks as a Oakland A, in the winter of 2010.

Edwin wasn’t exactly loved for his first couple of years as a Jay. Fans tend to be impatient. We weren’t all fans of Jose Bautista’s right away either. You would think we’d learn a little patience by now, especially with players with tons of power. Being fair to those that didn’t like him, his defense was pretty awful at third base.

He has had his moments, including burning himself with fireworks on New Years. But, there were far more fun moments:

I miss that.

Edwin had 5 seasons for the Jays, putting up bWAR values of over 3.5 each year. He was a a fun guy to watch. Watching his reaction to the hats being thrown out on the field, when he hit the 3 home runs, was great.

On the Jays franchise leader board Edwin sits:

  • 7th among position players in bWAR at 24.3
  • 4th in slugging average, at .522
  • 3th in home runs at 239.
  • 12thin games player at 99.

We really were very lucky, the Jays put him on waivers, back in November 2010 and the A’s claimed him, but released him a month later and he came back to us. It is hard to imagine what the Jays would have been like if we didn’t get him back.

I guess my favorite Edwin moment was this one:

But watching him smell his bat to somehow check if it was cracked, is up there in my favorite memories.

After the 2017 season Edwin signed a free agent contract with Cleveland. He got 3 guaranteed years for $60 million, plus a 1-year option at $25 million with a $5 million buy out.

The first year was very good, he hit .258/.377/.504 with 38 home runs. Last year wasn’t as good with the bat, he hit .246/.336/.474 with 32 homer. Cleveland made the playoffs both seasons, but didn’t get past the ALDS either year.

Now he is a Mariner, as Cleveland has been trying to cut salary. I’m kind of expecting the Mariners to flip him, but, if they don’t, there might be a trip to Seattle in the works to go see him.

Edwin, Happy Birthday, pour yourself a Mamajuana and have a great day.

It is also Kevin Mench birthday, he turns 41 today. Kevin was half of the two headed Mencherson monster that delighted (very subtle sarcasm there, for those of you that weren’t following the team at the time) Jays fans in 2008.

And Frank Menechino turns 48 today. Frank was a utility infielder for the Jays in 2004 and 2005. He had a very good season, hitting .301/.400/.504 in 2004 and then a lesser season, hitting .216/.352/.345 in 2005, playing about 70 games each season. Frank was one of many that have come to us in trade from the A’s over the years.

So Happy Birthday Kevin and Frank. Hope it is a good one.
