The winner of the number 6 moment of the 2010s was John McDonald’s Father’s Day home run.

I’m sure you know the back story, John McDonald’s dad was dying of cancer and he told John to hit a home run for after he passed. John wasn’t a home run hitter, he had Just 28 in his career. And, of course, he wasn’t an everyday player, so it might have taken months for him to hit one out.

His first game back after his father’s death and funeral was Father’s Day. John was on the bench. In the ninth inning, with the Blue Jays down 9-3, Cito sent him in as a defensive replacement for Aaron Hill. And his spot came around to hit in the bottom of the inning. You know what happened.

It was his first home run of 2010. McDonald said that the bad part of it was that he couldn’t call his dad and talk to him about it.

He was/is a great guy. Everyone liked him. When he hit this one out, everyone felt so good for him. There are very few baseball moments that brought a tear to my eye while watching, but this was one of them.

He’ll always be one of my favorite player.
