The winner of the vote for the number 14 Blue Jays moment of the 2010s is Kevin Pillar stealing second, third and home against the Yankees last year.
Kevin had a good day, from the recap:
Kevin Pillar had a walk (yay), a single, and a very nice catch in CF (he also struck out after being up 3-0). And he scored a big insurance run in the 8th, getting a single (after Solarte’s homer), stealing second and then third, and then stealing home, while Dellin Betances threw wild to the plate trying to catch him. That might be the best play we get this season. It was perfect.
That season base runners stole 13 bases (caught twice) in 66.2 innings against Betances. 2016 was even worse, 21 stoles with no on caught in 73 innings. Career there has been 72 stolen bases against him with 12 caught stealing (14%). Obviously Kevin knew that he had trouble with the stolen base.
We won the game 5-3. Yangervis Solarte hit a game winning home run in the 8th inning (remember how good he was at the start of that season?), also off Betances, who pitched 2 innings, giving up 3 hits, 2 earned, 1 walk with 4 strikeouts. Marco Estrada went 7 innings, allowing 3 hits. Ryan Tepera got the win, with an inning pitched, and Roberto Osuna got the save.
It was our first win of the season, after losing our first two games. And it was the start of a 4 game win streak and the beginning of a 12-3 run. Unfortunately the rest of the season didn’t go that well and we finished 73-89, 4th in the AL East.
Looking at the video, you might notice that Kevin’s single to get on base, was a nice swing, going the other way on a pitch on the outside of the plate.
I’ve been trying not to campaign for any of the ‘moments’ but I’m surprised at the lack of votes or Marco Estrada’s start in the ALDS in 2014. His other playoff start got the number 4 spot.
Anyway.....
