Better know your Blue Jays 40-man: Tim Mayza

MLB: Toronto Blue Jays-Media Day Butch Dill-USA TODAY Sports

Tim Mayza has spent the last couple of seasons traveling back and forth between Toronto and Buffalo. And he still has options so he might be up and down some again this year. But, with Loup gone, Mayza looks to be the number one lefty out of the pen.

Last year Tim had a 3.28 ERA in 35.2 innings with the Jays, allowing 33 hits, 3 homers, 13 walks and 40 strikeouts.

And, of course, he did much better vs. LHB (who hit .233/.258/.317 against him than RHP (.253/.371/.413). He could be a good LOOGY (unless Manfred gets his way about not letting pitchers face just one batter), but he throws hard enough he should be able to get some right-handers out too.

He throws hard. FanGraphs says he averaged 94.3 mph on his fastball and 86.5 on the slider. That’s all he throws and they are split almost 50/50.

I’m hoping he gets a full season in.

ZiPS figures him to get into 54 games, and have a 4.21 ERA.

I’ve always been pulling for Tim, maybe because he’s so good for me in OOTP Baseball.

Tim was a 12th round pick in the 2013 draft. He’s one of 2 players from that round who made it to the majors. The other is Jeff McNeil from the Mets. McNeil played in 63 games last year, hitting .329/.381/.471 and he got some Rookie of the Year votes.
